What: A new AI tool examines relationships between known materials at a scale unachievable by humans. These relationships are used to identify and numerically rank combinations of elements that are likely to form new materials. The rankings are used by scientists to guide exploration of the large unknown chemical space, making experimental investigation far more efficient.

This human-AI collaboration has already led to the discovery of four new materials including a group that may be key to development of new batteries. Scientists use AI to create drug regime for rare form of brain cancer in children
Hopes that breakthrough marks new era where artificial intelligence can develop treatments for all types of cancer

What: AI has identified a drug combination which appears to have promise as a future treatment for some children with incurable brain cancer. Computer scientists and cancer specialists used AI to identify two drugs that could be combined so that one treats the cancer and the other enhances delivery of the treatment to the required sites.

Key Takeaway: This provides another example of a human-AI combination supporting efficient and targeted research. A full clinical trial is now planned. One of the professors involved states that “we’ve moved to this stage much more quickly than would ever have been possible without the help of AI.”


Would AI lie to you?

Falsehoods more likely with large language models
A new study from researchers at the University of Oxford and OpenAI finds that large language models are more likely to generate falsehoods.

What: Researchers compiled a benchmark set of questions and factually correct answers and posed these to various AI language models. All of the models provided a high percentage of factually incorrect answers. Performance decreased as the size of the models increased.

Answer: “It tells us that global warming is a hoax.”

The recent trend for widely used AI language models such as GPT3 is that “bigger is better”.  But this research indicates that models are learning untruths from huge sets of poor quality training data. It supports a growing body of research indicating that the quality of the training data, as well as size, is important in the overall performance of AI language models.

AI/ML must knows

Foundation Models - any model trained on broad data at scale that can be fine-tuned to a wide range of downstream tasks. Examples include BERT and GPT-3. (See also Transfer Learning)
Few shot learning - Supervised learning using only a small dataset to master the task.
Transfer Learning - Reusing parts or all of a model designed for one task on a new task with the aim of reducing training time and improving performance.
Generative adversarial network - Generative models that create new data instances that resemble your training data. They can be used to generate fake images.
Deep Learning - Deep learning is a form of machine learning based on artificial neural networks.
